Woodland Beach, Delaware

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been spending time in Woodland Beach recently taking photos for a Spotlight on the Bay story. Last week, Harvey ran into a guy on the beach who told him about a “Spanish shipwreck” we could hike to further down the beach. Our unplanned visit that day was about 3 hours after low tide, so the wreckage was under several feet of water.

We made plans then to go back today, and here it is at almost exactly dead low tide – the tide actually turned while we were out there. This time, we ran into a different old timer on the way down the beach, and he told us that it was an old stone barge that had run aground. He said they used to use them to haul stones up the bay to build jetties, and that the wreckage had been there since before he could remember. He was 83, so I guess that makes it older than I had initially assumed.

Great Blue Heron fishing in the Delaware Bay. I could’ve taken 1000 more photos of him – he paced us for about 1/4 mile, skimming along the shoreline, landing for a while, then repeating the same thing again and again ’til finally he went up over the berm to one of the ponds just inland from the beach.
