Kitts Hummock, Delaware

There are places along the beach where you can collect a whole handful of these little shells within a square foot or two. It’s amazing the things you see when you slow down and look. :)

As I was walking down the beach, I had some unexpected company. I’m pretty sure the pilot had to have seen me, since he swooped around a few times and then flew almost directly over my head on the way out. Too bad I didn’t have the zoom lens with me.

The first and second shots are what the tideline looks like at Kitts (and several other Delaware Bay beaches). Rather than the crashing waves or ripples of sandier beaches, the waves coming through the peaty muck down here make more of a slurping plop. The crab shell wasn’t much more than about an inch across. The next shot is of the plants that keep the shoreline (mostly) intact, by retaining the sand, but they’re not much match for people driving on the beach and knocking down fences.
