First sunrise of 2009, 22 degrees, windchill of 9 degrees. Got there about 20 minutes before sunrise, which was pushing it in those temps! I love the twilight before the sunrise and after the sunset more than the actual rising and setting, though.

It’s a little hard to tell from the photos, but the beach and the mud flat were frozen solid. I didn’t even leave footprints once I got down near the water at all. You can see a horizontal line just below the horizon in most of the photos which is where the actual water starts. Everything closer than that is ice and frozen mud. The two sand shots near the end are of the texture of the frozen sand down just beside the water, and the last shot is my frigid perch for the sunrise.

Kitts Hummock is also part of the St Jones component of the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve. For more information about the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve, please visit their website. For more information about volunteer opportunities with the Reserve, click here.

The beginning of the Boundary Trail, and a detour down the Island Trail. Lots of cypresses everywhere. Still intending to go for just a short walk and then turn around.

Ted Harvey Wildlife Area, Kent County, Delaware

A few last frost shots before most of it melted, and a path. Faced with the adventure the path in the photos hinted at, the following went through my mind:

  • I am wearing my unlucky sky blue Merrell trail running shoes, which are extensively vented on the sides
  • The tide is coming in. How far in, I don’t know, because I neglected to check the tidal charts before embarking.
  • I have a breakfast date at 9am with people who would never let me live it down if I showed up soaked from the knees down.
  • Why did I leave my boots in the truck?

Ah well, next time I’ll go all the way, in boots.

And yes, i always keep a tripod and a pair of boots in my truck.
