It’s been below freezing for all but a few hours of the past week, so it was pretty icy. The ice goes “shhhhhh” as it slides over and under the other ice, and standing on the end of the boat ramp watching it is like seeing plate tectonics in action.

Port Mahon, Delaware

I’ve been meaning to get back out here since the double nor’easters we had recently, but today’s the first time I made it. I decided spur of the moment to go out, so I didn’t check the tide charts and wasn’t sure how far from high tide it was (or on which side of it) when I got to the point where I took the first photo above. It was 20 minutes or so before sunrise, and darker than it looks in the photo, which I took from a position between the headlights of my truck. From there, I backed out – no way was I driving through water I couldn’t see the end of, especially after seeing the condition of the road further out. The 6th photo is where it looks like the road has completely washed out and been built back up with gravel, which is also beginning to wash back out. The last photo is where the water is still lapping right up to what’s left of the road on my way back out.
