Arrived about 20 minutes before sunrise, but the sun never did really show itself. Only three other people on the beach the entire time I was out walking – a runner with a dog, another lone woman, and the usual metal detector guy (although I don’t know if it’s the same one every time).

City of Rehoboth Beach Historic Marker

Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk, Rehoboth, Delaware

Historic marker, which I’ve been meaning to take a photo of since it went up. They’re not much to look at, but the text is usually pretty interesting.

City of Rehoboth Beach

On January 27, 1873, the “Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church” was incorporated by the Delaware legislature for the purpose of establishing “a permanent camp meeting ground and Christian sea-side resort.” With the coming of the railroad in 1878, the growth of the community was accelerated. On March 19, 1891, an act was passed incorporating the municipality as Cape Henlopen City. The name was formally changed to Rehoboth in 1893. Since its founding the City of Rehoboth Beach has continued to be one of the most popular resorts on the Atlantic coast, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

More off season construction this year, looks like they’ve taken out a huge section of boardwalk for some reason. As you can see from the construction worker closest to the camera on the left side, the former boardwalk is now a gaping hole. Hmph.
